Are you looking for how to look classy instantly? You’re in luck!
So, you want to look “classy,” but you don’t have a lot of time, feel like the clothes you like fit into your budget, or don’t even know where to start. I get it. I’ve been there. Whether you want to look classy for a special event or want to totally reinvent your style, this article will help you look classier instantly – without spending a fortune!
What Does it Mean to Look Classy?
Looking classy is going to have a different definition depending on who you are, but I think it is very simple. To me, looking classy means looking intentional and being dressed/behaving appropriately for the situation. Obviously, what you wear in a given situation is going to depend on a variety of different factors. However, there are a few key things that you can always do to make sure you look classy no matter what situation you are in.
ONE // Dress Modestly
The number one easiest way to look classy is to wear clothes that look classy. Don’t worry, you don’t have to go out and spend a fortune on a Chanel jacket to do this. The one thing that women who always look classy have in common is that they are dressed modestly. Now, don’t worry, you don’t have to look like a nun or only wear skirts that reach your ankles. Simply opting for a neckline that doesn’t show too much cleavage, avoiding crop tops, and not wearing extremely short shorts/skirts will automatically make you look classier. Sure, you can look classy in something low cut, shorter, or midriff-bearing. However, it is a lot harder than if you choose a more modest/conservative outfit.
TWO // Avoid Distressed Fabrics
Honestly, have you ever seen Kate Middleton in ripped jeans? No, of course, you haven’t. Besides being my own, personal least favorite thing, distressed fabrics just don’t look classy. Whether it’s cutoff shorts, ripped jeans, or shirts that are made to look like your dog chewed them up, distressed fabrics instantly make your outfit look cheaper and less classy.
THREE // Choose Solids
I love a good floral print, but sometimes they can look cheap or too busy and distracting. Solids are much easier to style, which makes your outfit instantly look more intentional. Additionally, solids are less recognizable as instantly belonging to a particular brand. Unless someone is very, very familiar with different fashion retailers at all price points, they won’t be able to tell a white t-shirt from Hanes from a white t-shirt from Rag & Bone. However, choosing a patterned t-shirt will make the style/price point a lot more recognizable. So, if you want to look instantly classier and like you are dressed expensively, choose the solid option!
FOUR // When in Doubt, Pick Classic Patterns
If you do opt for a pattern, you will instantly look classier if you choose a classic pattern! Whether you choose a classic striped boatneck tee, or want to go bold with a polka-dot maxi dress, a classic pattern will instantly look classy and timeless.
FIVE // Go Monochrome
If you want to instantly look classy and put together, opt for a monochrome look. A monochrome outfit looks so, so put together, classy, and high-end, but it doesn’t have to be expensive. Whether you are dressed in head-to-toe black, a few shades of blue, or even an all-pink look, you will instantly look elegant and put together if you stick to a monochromatic outfit.
SIX // Incorporate Textures
If you are ready to really level up your classy look, think about the role that texture plays in your outfit. Adding texture makes your outfit look more interesting and thoughtfully styled. Whether you are incorporating a chunky knit or a sleek satin blouse, different textures are more appealing to the eye. Adding in textures is an easy way to make your outfit look luxurious and intentional. Adding texture is especially powerful when you are wearing a monochromatic outfit, as it will create additional contrast and interest to your outfit.
SEVEN // Wear Natural Looking Makeup
If you want to instantly look classy, choose the makeup that emphasizes your natural features. Avoid wearing too much makeup or going for anything too bold or cakey. A good rule of thumb is to stick to a neutral palette and don’t go for anything too crazy. I really like this warm neutral eyeshadow palette for a year-round neutral look! It also comes in cool, amber, and rosewood neutral options, so you can easily stick to your preferred tones.
EIGHT // Stay Well-Groomed
Keep your hair and nails looking clean and groomed! How you choose to do this is up to your own personal preference. Whether you want nine-inch long neon pink nails or short nails with no polish, just keep them looking clean and groomed. The same goes for your hair! It doesn’t really matter how you prefer for your hair to look, as long as you keep it clean it will look classy. In my opinion, grooming is super personal, and there is no ideal way to style your hair/nails/eyebrows/etc. to instantly look classier. However! Looking un-groomed can make you instantly look less put together, and therefore less classy.
Personally, I would die if I had to wash and style my hair every day, so I highly recommend investing in a dry shampoo that works for you. I love this one from Target! It smells amazing and doesn’t leave any white residue on your hair.
If you want a super-easy way to do your nails, I highly recommend Static Nails. You can read my full review on them here! I am super bad at doing my own nails and don’t currently have the budget/time for a bi-weekly manicure, and these are the next best thing.
NINE // Carry Yourself with Confidence
Honestly, if you asked me “how to look classy” and said I could only say one thing, I would say that you need to carry yourself with confidence. Whether that means checking in with your posture throughout the day, working on reducing the number of times you say “like”, or cutting down on the number of exclamation points you use in an email, carry yourself like you are someone worth paying attention to. Because you are! Sometimes the world just needs a few cues 😉
