September is finally here! I’ve never really given September a lot of love, but for some reason, it feels like a fresh start this year. I feel like its a good time to set goals and establish healthy habits that will benefit me this fall and winter. So, without further ado, here are my goals for September:
1. 30 Days of Yoga
I have gotten into yoga a few times, but it is less of a practice for me and more something that I go back to when I feel like I need it. Well, this is one of those times where I feel like I need it, but I also want to try to build a practice. I want to move more, but I want to incorporate more movement into my days without viewing that movement as exercise. So, I’ve recruited a few friends and we are going to do Yoga with Adriene’s September calendar! The focus this month is to, “build strength and stability for optimal physical and mental health.” That sounds great to me, and I’m excited to get started!
2. Bed by 10:30
Now, I think this goal will be pretty easy to achieve. This past summer, I’ve been going to bed earlier and earlier, but not by any particular time so it varies based on when things get done. However, I keep reading about the benefits of adults having a bedtime. These all sound good to me, so why not!?
3. Finish Unpacking
This is a bit embarrassing, but I still haven’t fully unpacked. Before moving to my current place I had to move my fiance up, which included packing, a 19-hour drive, cleaning a new place, setting up a new place, and unpacking. Then I got my job offer, so withing two weeks I was going back home, packing up the rest of our stuff to move out before the lease ended, cleaning our old place, repacking, driving another 19 hours, unpacking, building furniture, and starting a new job.
I had a week between getting here and starting my new position, but I got tired just typing the above summary, so as you can probably guess, I was too exhausted to finish absolutely everything. It doesn’t help that what I have left to unpack is more “nice to have” things than necessities. For example, I have a box in the kitchen that is housing a blender. I have been wanting a smoothie bowl for the past week, but every morning I look at the box and think “Actually, toast sounds great!” Obviously I can’t keep this up forever, so, I’m committing in writing: by the end of September, I will finish unpacking this place!
My fiance’s birthday is this month! I’m making it a goal to fully celebrate his birthday and make sure he feels extra loved.
5. Daily Walk
Lately, I’ve been a lazy dog owner. My dog hits her move goal just pacing around the apartment and playing with toys, so I have been using that as an excuse to just walk her around the block when we go potty. I know that isn’t the best for her long term health (or for her behavior during the day!) so I want to commit to taking her on a walk that stretches farther than our usually potty route every day.
6. 15 Minutes a Day
Now, this is kind of a low stakes goal, but I really want to focus on spending 15 minutes a day on tidying/cleaning the house. A distinction I want to make is that this goes beyond just loading/unloading the dishwasher and picking up my work things at the end of the day. This is time spent tidying/cleaning the things that usually get left until the weekend when I “have time.” This isn’t enough time to deep clean a room, but I think it will help keep things tidy. I’m hoping it also helps me not spend an hour cleaning the living room (vacuuming the floor and couch, mopping, etc.) every weekend.
Back in Early Quarantine, I needed a way to deal with anxious thoughts. I ended up downloading – and paying for a year subscription to – Headspace. It is great, and I love it, but I am so, so bad at keeping up with it, and meditation is a practice that you need to do consistently to get the full benefits. Therefore, this month I want to complete 30 meditations in the Headspace app.
I’m looking forward to seeing what September brings! I will keep track of my goals in a journal and will report back on how successful I was once the month is over.
How are you feeling this September? Do you have any goals you want to accomplish this month? Let me know so we can hold each other accountable!
